John DeLorean and the Pontiac GTO

John DeLorean (1925–2005) revolutionized the American auto industry by spearheading the creation of the Pontiac GTO, widely regarded as the first true muscle car. DeLorean, alongside engineers Bill Collins and Russ Gee, wanted to target young buyers with high-performance vehicles, moving away from GM's focus on older demographics. As a rebellious Pontiac engineer in the early 1960s, he violated a GM policy against putting large engines in mid-size cars by stuffing a V8 into the Pontiac Tempest creating the 1964 GTO as an optional package. DeLorean created a loophole to circumvent a GM restriction on intermediate car engine sizes, DeLorean marketed the 389 V8 as an "option package" rather than a standalone model. The GTO was an instant hit, igniting the muscle car era of the 1960s. Its success prompted high-performance iterations like the 1969 "The Judge". DeLorean later became the youngest head of the Pontiac division before leaving to form his own company, DeLorean Motor Company.
